Making a Beardie Harness

Bob Mears

I now have a new design, that allows you to clip the harness onto your BD but leave the leash off until you are ready to go outside (very useful in the car!)

To make this new design, you will still need some nice soft leather (I use old wallet and handbag leather, which you can get at thrift stores) and a Ferret Harness by Hagen, which will provide you with the clip and a 'D'-Ring to attach the leash (which comes with the harness!)

YOU WILL NEED:

  • A piece of THIN, SOFT leather

  • A length of woven nylon string (like bootlace material) about 3' long

  • A spring-loaded toggle (sold for draw string pants and for camping bags)

  • Something to cut and make holes in leather with

THIS IS WHAT YOU DO TO THE LEATHER

First, practice on a piece of paper to see if these instructions make sense!

Lay the leather down so the long sides are top and bottom, the "center line" between them (the short sides are the "ends").

Make a hole in each end; about 1/8" diameter, CENTERED 3/8" from each end.

Cut 2 oval holes 7/8" by 5/8", CENTERED 1 1/2" apart along the center line.

Trim around the end holes to make each end rounded to about 3/8", then trim along edge to produce a long "oval" with all 4 holes in it, it should look a bit like a very small ‘burglar' mask..........

HOW TO ASSEMBLE ALL THE BITS

Slide the toggle about 300mm down the string (you will have to push the button to do this).

Take the end of the string you pushed through the toggle and thread it through each of the end holes.

Tie a knot in the end of the string so it can't pull out of the leather.

Make a looping circle with the string and the leather and put your BD's front feet through each of the oval holes (like a vest).

Pull the string tightish and slide the toggle down to lock it in place.

Have fun with your Beardie! Good luck!

IT SHOULD LOOK SOMETHING LIKE THIS!
