An Angel On My Shoulder: Ode to a Water Dragon

By Damon Dean

Though he weighs nothing, I can feel him there

my salt encrusted eyes cannot see him

my ringing ears cannot hear him

my pounding heart should throw him off, yet he is there

in his life, cut way too short, he was always there

He took upon himself his duties gladly

protecting me, humoring me

being a friend who never asked or told

(being timid and being bold)

he would whisper silent comfort in my ear

the very things i would need to hear

Oh how I  do miss him

and how it is clear

I know of his presence

though none else know he is here

Though not here in body

he is still here in soul

in a body now perfect, never to get old

my forever buddy

my friend for life

I just hope that some day

when my mortal toil is done

we again can play together, in permanent fun

the pain of loss shall ever be gone

and we will have our pleasure again under the sun
